There is no standard for the amount of factory-installed speakers in a car. In fact, that number seems to increase every year as automakers introduce premium factory sound systems with features like noise cancellation and engine sound simulation. But for this article, we’re going to stick to the basics.
When replacing the front and rear speakers, a good goal is to have a system with uniform timbre. That means using speakers from the same brand and series on both the front and back. If you have a limited budget, you don’t have to do it all at once. Focus on the front speakers first. When you’re ready, upgrade the rears with speakers from the same series (or at least the same brand) for consistent sound characteristics.

Speakers for the front of your vehicle – Some vehicles only have two speakers in the front, one in each door. They utilize a full-range design. Other vehicles feature four speakers on the front, two on each side. Usually, these are woofers in the port and a tweeter positioned higher up in the port, corner speaker or dashboard.
Port woofer – An example of speaker component placement. The woofer is at the bottom and the tweeter at the top.
Many vehicles also have a center speaker on the dashboard, which typically plays essential vehicle functions such as audible door warnings and navigation instructions, as well as music. Many people choose to keep the original speaker in that location.
